Comic Kathy Griffin gets Bravo network talk show

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Comic Kathy Griffin is never shy about offering her opinions. Soon she'll have a weekly outlet for them.

The Bravo network said Saturday that it will premiere "Kathy," a once-a-week talk show hosted by Griffin sometime this spring. The network hasn't decided when it will air regularly.

Bravo promised that "this will be the destination to get Griffin's thoughts on everything pop culture as she rants on the week's biggest headlines and tabloid gossip." The show will also feature stand-up comedy, celebrity interviews and taped segments.

In addition, Griffin will perform two stand-up comedy specials on Bravo this year.

Ethiopia enters Somalia, but avoids African Union joint operation

Unlike Uganda, Burundi, Kenya and Djibouti, which have sent thousands of troops under the African Union banner, Ethiopia is intervening in Somalia unilaterally, and won't stay for long.

After weeks of denials, the Ethiopian government has used the advent of the new year to officially acknowledge it had rejoined the battle against militants in neighboring Somalia.

"Together with Transitional Federal Government forces the town of Beledwyne has been liberated from al-Shabaab," Communications Minister Bereket Simon said on Jan. 3.

The arrival of Ethiopian troops from the west ? who officially left in 2009 after deposing the Islamic Courts in a 2.5 year campaign ? buttresses the efforts of Ugandan, Burundian, Djiboutian and Kenyan forces, all now fighting under the banner of the African Union.

Unlike the Kenyans, who initially independently entered southern Somalia in October, Bereket says Ethiopia has no intention of becoming part of the African Union operation ? and so receiving funds for their efforts from the European Union and others. This self-reliant stance backs up official statements it has no intention of staying for long.

Ethiopian troops first crossed the border again in the middle of November, according to The New York Times. As the government denied the claims of multiple eye-witnesses, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development ? a group of seven East African nations chaired currently by Ethiopia's leader Meles Zenawi ? requested support from Ethiopian forces at a meeting a few days later.

The subsequent coyness about the operation is due to not wanting to hand Islamist extremists Al Shabab a propaganda coup about an invading Christian army, sources close to the Ethiopian government say. Although the diverse country of 82.9 million contains 25 million Muslims, Ethiopia has a long-standing connection to Orthodox Christianity and Christians comprise 62 percent of the population, according to a 2008 census.

While ethnic Somali rebels sporadically attack in Ethiopia's Ogaden region, which Somalia attempted to annex in an unsuccessful 1977 invasion, it does not fear a resurgent neighbour. "Ethiopia is not worried about a strong Somalia for many years," says an adviser to the Ethiopian government, privately.

Instead, the incursion ? which is described as closer to a continuation of cross-border raiding than a repeat of 2006 ? is a result of Ethiopia's desire to fulfil its role as regional powerhouse and exploit a unique opportunity to dispose of Al Shabab.

Even if the Al Qaeda-linked rebels are diffused, cutting off funds by controlling the likes of Kismayo port while attacking on multiple fronts could lead to demoralization, defections, and moves toward negotiations by moderate factions, it is believed. ??

As with the June deployment of Ethiopian peacekeepers in the flashpoint Sudanese region of Abyei, such action helps Ethiopia maintain its tight relations with influential Western allies.

Although there is little reason for optimism, the eventual onset of peace in Somalia would give land-locked Ethiopia the stable neighbour it desires, and access to its ports.?

Obama to promote insourcing of jobs

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is highlighting companies that have returned jobs to the U.S. and he says that's one more way of putting people back to work.

The White House plans a forum Wednesday, called "Insourcing American Jobs," that will bring together business leaders who shifted work back home. The president said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that the event will discuss ways business leaders can return more jobs to the country.

"We're heading in the right direction. And we're not going to let up," Obama said on the heels of the government reporting Friday that the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent in December.

Obama noted that the jobs report showed the economy added more than 200,000 private sector jobs last month and that more than 3 million private sector jobs had been added during the past 22 months. He said the nation was "starting 2012 with manufacturing on the rise and the American auto industry on the mend."

The president said the U.S. couldn't return "to the days when the financial system was stacking the deck against ordinary Americans," citing his decision to install former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray as the director of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau while the Senate was on break, circumventing Republican opposition to the appointment.

Obama said his "New Year's resolution" to all Americans was to "keep doing whatever it takes to move this economy forward and to make sure that middle-class families regain the security they've lost over the past decade."

New York Rep. Nan Hayworth, delivering the GOP address, said the jobs report showed the difficulty that many Americans face in finding work. Hayworth said the unemployment rate has remained above 8 percent for 35 straight months, "the longest such stretch since the Great Depression."

"Leaders in Washington should have no higher priority this year than getting our economy back to creating jobs," Hayworth said.

The New York congresswoman said House Republicans would promote small business and reduce government regulation.

D-Link DHP501-AV Powerline AV 500 Adapter Starter Kit

Powerline networking, which uses your home?s electrical wiring to send and receive data, has been around for years, but until recently it has been held back by slow throughput speeds, interference from other electrical appliances, and the emergence of Wi-Fi as the preferred home networking technology. However, the latest crop of powerline devices now offer ?theoretical? throughput speeds of 500 Mbps and are impervious to interference from all but the most power hungry appliances. And when it comes to transferring large chunks of data, powerline is exponentially faster than Wi-Fi. D-Link?s DHP501-AV Powerline AV 500 Adapter Starter Kit ($159.99 list) has everything you need to add powerline technology to your network. It offers speedy transfer rates and installs in minutes, but the adapters are bulky and can be easily disconnected from their outlet.

Features and Design
Like Netgear?s Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit?($159, 4 stars)?the D-Link DHP501-AV Kit comes with two adapters, two Ethernet cables, and a CD containing a quick installation guide and a Management utility. ?The disc also includes a user manual, a feature missing from the Netgear kit. Measuring 3.9 x 2.7 x1.8-inches (HWD) the DHP501-AV adapters are taller and wider than the Netgear AV 500 adapters but are identical in weight (0.4 pounds). However, the D-Link adapter?s electrical contacts are mounted on a block that juts out 3/8 of an inch from the back of the housing, preventing the adapter to sit flush with the wall. As a result, the adapter can be easily knocked out of the outlet. In fact, I had to tape one adapter to the wall to keep it from falling out of an older outlet in my house. The adapter?s height also makes it difficult to use the second outlet; I was able to use a two-pronged plug above the adapter but a three-pronged plug, such as those used for most PCs, doesn?t fit.

The DHP501-AV?s housing is done up in a high-gloss white finish and sports rounded edges and a small D-Link logo on the front. There are also three LED indicators on the front that keep you abreast of what?s going on. The Power LED maintains a solid green glow when the adapter is powered up and blinks when it enters power saving mode or when security settings are being changed. The Powerline LED is green when connected to a network and blinks when transmitting data. The light is off if no compatible powerline device are found. A green light indicates a link rate greater than 80 Mbps, while an amber light means the link rate is somewhere between 50-80 Mbps. Red means a rate of less than 50 Mbps. The Ethernet port is positioned on the right side of the adapter, as are a security button and a reset switch that returns the adapter to its factory settings. Setting up the 128-bit AES security is painless; simply press the security button on one adapter until the Power LED blinks (about two seconds). That generates a random encryption key that will be used by all compatible HomePlug AV adapters on the network. Next, press the security button on the second adapter, but make sure you do it within two minutes of pressing the first button, otherwise it will not share the key. For more than two adapters, repeat the process.

Setup and Installation
In order to use the D-Link Powerline Management Utility you first have to install the WinPcap packet capturing software. The utility console lists all powerline devices installed and running on your network and displays the name, MAC address, location (local or remote), connection quality, link rate, and firmware version of each device. From this console you can upgrade the firmware for each device, change encryption key settings, and rename the adapters. However, you can?t assign QoS (Quality of Service) priorities to each adapter like you can with the Netgear Powerline Utility. Instead, the DHP501-AV uses a proprietary QoS technology that looks for data that typically requires high bandwidth, such as gaming and video files, and automatically gives it a high priority. ?

Installation is a snap. Plug one adapter into an outlet close to your router and connect it to the router with one of the Ethernet cables. Avoid using power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords as they may reduce performance. Also, try to use an outlet that isn?t servicing a device that draws a lot of power. Plug the second adapter into any outlet in the house (as long as it shares the same circuit breaker box), and you?ve got wired Ethernet connectivity.

Performance
The DHP501-AV performed quite well on my transfer tests. Copying a 100MB folder from my desktop PC to my laptop (in another room) took 14 seconds, while a 500MB folder took 1 minute and 14 seconds. Both times were slightly faster than the Netgear Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit, which needed 15 seconds for the 100MB transfer and 1 minute and 20 seconds for the 500MB transfer. In comparison, my Wi-Fi connection needed 1 minute and 18 seconds to transfer the 100MB folder and 9 minutes and 25 seconds to transfer the larger 500MB folder.

The Management utility recorded a 500 Mbps connection from the adapter to the router and 158 Mbps from point to point. The Netgear kit also gave me 500 Mbps to the router but came in at a slightly higher point to point connection rate of 185 Mbps. The DHP501-AV provides more than enough bandwidth for streaming video; The Blues Brothers on Netflix (via my PS3) played smoothly with no stutter and was perfectly in sync. ?

If you want wired Ethernet connectivity throughout your house but want to avoid running cable, the D-Link DHP501-AV Powerline AV 500 Adapter Starter Kit will get the job done. Its bulky adapters may be an issue when it comes to sharing an outlet, however, and it doesn?t allow you to prioritize network traffic. If either issue is a deal breaker, consider the Netgear Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit instead. ??

Williams withdraws from Brisbane with injury (AP)

BRISBANE, Australia ? Serena Williams' Australian Open preparations took a major hit Wednesday when she injured her left ankle and withdrew from the Brisbane International.

Playing in her first tournament since losing the U.S. Open final in September, Williams was serving for the match with a 6-2, 5-3 lead against Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia when she twisted the ankle and crashed heavily to the court.

The 13-time Grand Slam winner lay near the baseline for several minutes while getting medical attention. She was helped to a courtside chair and had the ankle re-taped before resuming the second-round match and losing the next point to surrender a service break to Jovanovski.

Williams limped through the next game, wincing in pain after at least two points, before securing a 6-2, 6-4 win to advance to the Brisbane quarterfinals in her first trip Down Under since winning the 2010 Australian Open title.

She withdrew from the Brisbane tournament later Wednesday after having tests that "confirmed that I have a left ankle sprain (and) that I probably shouldn't play on."

"I'm going to take a couple of days off ? not too many ? and see how I feel," Williams said in a statement. "I'm still hopeful of playing the Australian Open."

After hobbling into a postmatch news conference, the 30-year-old Williams had initially said she was "anticipating it'll be OK."

"I'm always thinking I can play on, but at the same time I don't want to stress it out right now," Williams said.

She was due to meet Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Australian Open starts on Jan. 16 in Melbourne. Williams, a five-time winner at Melbourne Park, missed the 2011 Australian Open while she was recovering from two operations on her foot and blood clots in her lungs that kept her sidelined for about a year after the 2010 Wimbledon tournament.

She won two tournaments heading into the U.S. Open in August but, after losing the final to Sam Stosur, Williams didn't play another tournament last year due to injuries.

Williams said her first thought when she sprawled to the court near the baseline on Wednesday was "not again."

"That's what I felt," she said. "I was like, 'No way.'"

Williams usually wears a protective guard on her left ankle, but took it off during the second set because it was irritating another minor injury on her foot.

Stosur is already out after losing to Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-2 in the preceding match on center court, extending a run of never advancing beyond the second round at her home tournament.

It was the 28-year-old Benesova's fourth win over a top-10 player.

The No. 54-ranked Czech had never taken a set off Stosur in four previous matches but now finds herself in a quarterfinal match against Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters.

"Hopefully it was just a bad day and I will bounce back next week and the week after," Stosur said. "I don't want to dwell on it.

"It's not the ideal start but I am not going to panic and think it's all lost."

Also, sixth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia beat Nina Bratchikova of Russia 6-3, 6-2 and Kaia Kanepi of Estonia ousted seventh-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-0, 6-3.

On the men's side, second-seeded Gilles Simon of France beat Australian teenager James Duckworth 6-3, 7-5; third-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine beat Igor Andreev of Russia 6-7 (3), 7-6 (9), 6-2; sixth-seeded Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic had a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Jarkko Nieminen of Finland; and No. 8 Bernard Tomic of Australia trounced Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-1, 6-2.

Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal match against either top-seeded Andy Murray or Gilles Muller.
