Afghan shooting suspect to be brought back to US

(AP) ? A senior defense official says the U.S. soldier accused in the killings of 16 Afghan civilians is expected to be flown to the U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., as early as Friday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of security surrounding the move, says the shift does not necessarily mean a decision was imminent on announcing formal criminal charges against the suspect.

The suspect, whose name has not been made public, was moved from Afghanistan to Kuwait on Wednesday. Officials say that transfer was necessary because there was no appropriate detention facility to hold him in Afghanistan.

Leavenworth is the military's only maximum-security prison.

GMC's Not-So-Secret Denali Terrain Unveiling

CoveredTerrain

Behold, the 2013 GMC Denali Dinosaur Terrain. ?

?

By the time the silk sheet was removed, everyone already knew what was underneath. The Denali version of GMC's bulky looking Terrain had been announced by the company earlier that day, a Denali Acadia sat in the corner of the event space, and the sheets covering the name on the wall had fallen off?twice. So when the big moment happened, the crowd wasn't exactly shocked.?

?

And really, we shouldn't have been.

?

DenaliFront

?

The Denali trims of GMC's SUVs and trucks have been a boon for the company. First launched in 2009, the Denali badge was initially slapped only on the Yukon. But once GMC saw positive results, the luxury trim spread to the Sierra, Envoy, Acadia, and now, the Terrain.?According to GMC, in 2011, the Denali subbrand accounted for more than half of all Yukons sold, roughly a quarter of all Seirra HDs, and 28 percent of Acadias. All together, Denali branded vehicle sales were up a ridiculous 79 percent.?Take into account that the Terrain was also up a healthy 37 percent last year, and the move makes sense.?

?

Under the hood, a 301-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 engine with direct injection and variable valve timing will replace the 3.0-liter V-6 engine in the current Terrain lineup. GMC says the fuel efficiency remains roughly the same thanks to a host of weight-saving tricks in the new engine. The standard Terrain Ecotec 2.4-liter I-4 will also be an option for consumers.?As with other Terrains, front-wheel-drive is standard, but all-wheel-drive is always available.?

?

DenaliBlack

?

Exclusive to the Denali version of the Terrain will be dual-flow dampers to improve the ride and handling. The exterior will also feature Denali-only design cues such as chrome accents, body-colored front and rear fascias, and new headlight/taillight designs. As expected, the Denali Terrain is loaded with luxury on the inside: soft-touch materials and leather everywhere, French stitching, smoked-mahogany wood trim, eight-way power front seats, and illuminated front sill plates.

?

Tech-wise, GMC's Intellink infotainment system, forward collision alert, lane departure, and a programmable rear power liftgate will all come standard. ??

?

The 2013 Denali Terrain should be available sometime in the fall, but?GMC won't reveal pricing until closer to the release. ?

GOP hopefuls look South for next contests

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The raucous Republican presidential contest rolls into the Deep South this week with a pair of suddenly pivotal and tight races in Alabama and Mississippi.

The twin primaries on Tuesday follow a pair of weekend contests in the long, bruising fight to pick an opponent to President Barack Obama this fall. Setting the stage Saturday were Rick Santorum's romp in the Kansas caucuses and front-runner Mitt Romney's win in Wyoming.

Polls show a close race in the two upcoming contests, particularly in Alabama, where Romney, Santorum and Newt Gingrich all added to their TV advertising for the race's closing days.

Gingrich, whose campaign is struggling for survival, can ill afford a loss in either Mississippi or Alabama. Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, is seeking a Southern breakthrough to show he has the ability to win the support of evangelical voters.

Santorum hopes to knock Gingrich out of the contest and finally emerge as Romney's sole challenger from the right.

Speaking Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Santorum said his grassroots campaign has done very well against the better-funded Romney in one-on-one matchups. Still, he didn't call for Gingrich to quit the race.

"I didn't ask Speaker Gingrich to get in, I'm not going to ask him to get out," he said.

A Gingrich aide has said the former House speaker must win both Southern primaries to justify continuing in the campaign. But Gingrich strongly suggested otherwise on Friday as polls showed a tight contest in Alabama.

"I think there's a fair chance we'll win," he told The Associated Press about the contests in Alabama and Mississippi. "But I just want to set this to rest once and for all. We're going to Tampa," sight of the GOP's national convention this summer.

Romney had no campaign appearances Saturday. He won six of 10 Super Tuesday states earlier in the week.

Final returns in Kansas showed Santorum with 51 percent of the vote, far outpacing Romney, who had 21 percent. Newt Gingrich finished with 14 percent and Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning Texas congressman, trailed with 13 percent.

Santorum picked up 33 of the state's 40 delegates at stake, cutting slightly into Romney's overwhelming's advantage.

In Wyoming, Romney won seven of the 12 delegates up for grabs, Santorum three, Paul one. One delegate was uncommitted.

The contests in Kansas and Wyoming left Romney with 454 delegates in the AP's count, more than all his rivals combined. Santorum had 217, while Gingrich had 107 and Paul had 47.

Romney's totals included 22 that he picked up in the Virgin Islands, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

A candidate must win 1,144 to clinch the Republican presidential nomination at the national convention in Tampa next August.
