Can Long Distance Relationships Go The Distance? | Yuppee ...

Some couples feel obliged to split up after their geographically challenged relationships feel the strain of long journeys, lonely periods or growing trust issues.?But why should distance make a difference? Surely, if you are truly committed and interested, then no journey would be too long-winded and the effort would be totally worth it.

To investigate how long distance relationships find the staying power to function effectively, I spoke to Tom Harris, a 21-year old lifeguard who is in a long-term relationship with student Katie Wainwright, 20. After going out for 16 months, they have tackled the issues of long distance, so it?s time to uncover the secret to their success.

Can you tell me about how the two of you first met?

?Well, it is a pretty interesting story. It was in my local nightclub back in August 2011. I actually kissed her friend, but afterwards I got talking to Katie and I realised I found her really attractive. I was torn between two girls, but then Katie asked me out during a karaoke night so we started seeing each other.?

Where do you both live and how far is the distance between the two of you?

?We are both from Birmingham originally ? Katie lives in Shirley and I live in Solihull, but we are far apart whilst at university. I go to Coventry and she studies at Aberystwyth, which is obviously quite a distance when living in accommodation there. It takes me three and a half hours by train or car to visit her over in Wales.?

How often do you see each other?

?We try our best to see each other every three weeks (during semesters). When we go home for Christmas and summer then of course it is a lot more regular because we can more easily meet up.?

What are the difficulties in being so far apart?

?When you just want to talk to your girlfriend but you can?t. We have to go for long periods of time without seeing each other, and when we do finally meet it?s only for a couple of days. It?s hard because you end up spending more time apart then you do together.?

Can you think of any plus points of enduring a long distance relationship?

?I suppose an advantage is that Katie doesn?t go to my university ? this is good because it means I can more comfortably have a laugh with my squash mates. Basically, I can mess around with the lads without having a girlfriend there to hear any crude comments and the banter or whatever.?

And what would you say is the biggest disadvantage?

?It just isn?t ideal or very convenient because you can?t see each other whenever you want. Also, my squash mates all have girlfriends so when we go out clubbing they always go home early when all I want to do is stay out and have some fish bowls and a bit of a boogie!?

How do you cope being in a long distance relationship?

?Well, we are in our second year experiencing a long-distance relationship whilst at university so I guess we have just got used to it. There are plenty of ways to keep in touch; we regularly text, call and Skype so we always communicate frequently.?

Why do you think your relationship has lasted so long?

?To put it simply, we both like each other enough to make it work. It?s just about being willing and putting in the effort ? because Katie and I are committed, we have been strong enough to make it last.?

How do you deal with temptations whilst out and about without your girlfriend?

?I don?t get tempted by other girls. I don?t feel the need to cheat because I have never liked those who do and have always judged them badly. I have never understood the reason to be unfaithful. Also, because me and most of my friends all have girlfriends we never go out on the pull anyway, so it wouldn?t be an issue.?

Do you trust your girlfriend when you are so far away from each other?

?Yes. What is a relationship with no trust? I have to believe in her because it?s not like I?m there to keep an eye on things.?

What do you think of the phrase ?absence makes the heart grow fonder??

?I do agree with this, although it is a clich?. I guess it?s because when you aren?t with someone for very long then obviously you end up missing them.?

What advice would you give to people getting into long distance relationships?

?The most important thing is knowing that you have to put in the effort. If you aren?t prepared to fully commit to the long distance relationship then don?t bother.?

A CUP OF JO: Motherhood Mondays: Mouse Ear Top Knots

This month, we've featured back-to-school hair tutorials for girls every Monday. My friend Reagan of Hairdresser on Fire was our hair stylist, and, here, Sohji was our beautiful model. Here are Reagan's steps for mouse-ear top knots (and the sweetest photos)...
Little girls with bobs melt me. The only problem is that it can be hard to style such short hair! Sohji's mouse ear topknots are a great way to have some variety.

Prep: you'll want to comb out any tangles. You'll just need two elastics (I like Goody's clear ones) and some ribbon to jazz it up.

1. Create two equal sections at the top of the head. I like to follow the natural parting as much as possible on children.

2. Take your first section firmly in your hands and begin twisting it tightly. (Not too tight if she's tender headed!)

3. Continue to twist the section until it coils around itself like a little bun. Some hairs might pop out, but just go with it! What makes the style so sweet is that it's playful and spunky.

4. Secure with an elastic and repeat on the other side.

5. Add a ribbon or clip if you fancy.

Marine plants can flee to avoid predators

Scientists at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography have made the first observation of a predator avoidance behavior by a species of phytoplankton, a microscopic marine plant. Susanne Menden-Deuer, associate professor of oceanography, and doctoral student Elizabeth Harvey made the unexpected observation while studying the interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Their discovery will be published in the September 28 issue of the journal PLOS ONE.

"It has been well observed that phytoplankton can control their movements in the water and move toward light and nutrients," Menden-Deuer said. "What hasn't been known is that they respond to predators by swimming away from them. We don't know of any other plants that do this."

While imaging 3-dimensional predator-prey interactions, the researchers noted that the phytoplankton Heterosigma akashiwo swam differently in the presence of predators, and groups of them shifted their distribution away from the predators.

In a series of laboratory experiments, Menden-Deuer and Harvey found that the phytoplankton not only flee when in the presence of the predatory zooplankton, but they also flee when in water that had previously contained the predators. They found only a minimal effect when the phytoplankton were exposed to predators that do not feed on phytoplankton.

"The phytoplankton can clearly sense the predator is there. They flee even from the chemical scent of the predator but are most agitated when sensing a feeding predator," said Menden-Deuer.

When the scientists provided the phytoplankton with a refuge to avoid the predator ? an area of low salinity water that the predators cannot tolerate ? the phytoplankton moved to the refuge.

The important question these observations raise, according to Menden-Deuer, is how these interactions affect the survival of the prey species.

Measuring survival in the same experiments, the researchers found that fleeing helps the alga survive. Given a chance, the predators will eat all of the phytoplankton in one day if the algae have no safe place in which to escape, but they double every 48 hours if they have a refuge available to flee from predators. Fleeing makes the difference between life and death for this species, said Menden-Deuer.

"One of the puzzling things about some phytoplankton blooms is that they suddenly appear," she said. "Growth and nutrient availability don't always explain the formation of blooms. Our observation of algal fleeing from predators is another mechanism for how blooms could form. Amazingly, looking at individual microscopic behaviors can help to explain a macroscopic phenomenon."

The researchers say there is no way of knowing how common this behavior is or how many other species of phytoplankton also flee from predators, since this is the first observation of such a behavior.

"If it is common among phytoplankton, then it would be a very important process," Menden-Deuer said. "I wouldn't be surprised if other species had that capacity. It would be very beneficial to them."

In future studies, she hopes to observe these behaviors in the ocean and couple it with genetic investigations.
